Job Summary

Under supervision of the Head Start Center Director, the Temporary Substitute supports educational and operational duties for various center roles including Teacher, Teacher Aide, Food Service Manager, Janitor, or Center Director. Responsibilities include classroom monitoring, assisting with lesson prep, cleaning, checking children at arrival, supporting mealtimes, and ensuring safety in indoor and outdoor areas. This is a safety-sensitive role and is subject to a background check and random drug screenings.


Essential Functions

Substitute Duties

  1. Supervise classrooms in staff absences
  2. Assist in lesson plan preparation
  3. Help with arrival checks (appearance, temperature, etc.)

Center Operations

  1. Clean and sanitize classrooms and facilities
  2. Monitor outdoor play areas for safety

Non-Essential Function

Performs other job-related tasks as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Can be acquired on the job)

  • *Knowledge of SEARPDC, DHR, and Head Start policies and procedures
  • *Familiarity with early childhood development practices
  • *Understanding of safety procedures for children
  • Communication and reading comprehension skills
  • Ability to use basic math and office software
  • Capacity to assist with teaching and cleaning tasks
  • Ability to remain professional, organized, patient, and calm in dynamic environments
  • Ability to operate phones and drive if needed

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or GED
  2. Valid driver’s license and proof of insurability
  3. Ability to pass a background check and drug screening

Physical Demands

Mostly sedentary work, but may include walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, or driving. No unusual physical requirements.


Work Environment

Moderate exposure to safety risks, including working around equipment or potential contaminants. Use of protective gear may be required.
